True Ames Surf Fins

True Ames has been making surfboard fins since 1979, when surfer and craftsman Chuck Ames took over a small fin-making operation and began developing what would become one of surfing's most extensive collections of classic and contemporary fin templates.

The True Ames catalogue connects decades of surfboard design through collaborations with influential surfers, shapers and designers including George Greenough, Skip Frye, Ryan Lovelace, Liddle, Bonzer, Channel Islands and many others. Rather than treating the fin as an afterthought, True Ames approaches it as an integral part of how a surfboard turns, holds, releases and generates drive.

Single Fins, Longboard Fins, Twin Fins and System Fins

The range extends from classic single fins for longboards and mid-lengths to twin fins, thrusters, quads, side bites and specialised templates. True Ames also produces fins compatible with Futures and FCS fin systems, alongside traditional single-fin box and glass-on designs.

The legendary Greenough 4-A illustrates the thinking behind the range particularly well. Its relatively full base provides stability and drive, while its rake and moderately flexible tip allow the fin to remain responsive through turns. Available across a broad range of sizes, the template can be used on everything from longboards and mid-lengths to shorter single fins and 2+1 setups when appropriately sized.
