Becker Surfboards was founded in 1958 by Phil Becker, considered to be the person who has shaped the most surfboards in the world.
Over the 60-odd years the Palos Verdes, California, local has been in business, he is said to have shaved the most boards in the world, with over 130,000 longboards, funboards and shortboards. His boards are known for being created for the sole purpose of having fun in the water. These boards are often easy to surf and provide pure riding sensations. Phil told one of his associates: "Never forget that you're not just making surfboards, you're making real toys for adults".
In 1980, Phil, along with famed glider Steve Mangiagli and Dave Hollander, bought the shape factory of surf shop Rick Surfboards, for whom he had worked for many years. At the same time, they opened their first store, Becker Surfshop, on Pier Avenue in Hermosa Beach.
The Californian shaper sadly died of cancer in 2021 at the age of 81. Steve Mangiagli then took over the reins of his workshop, keeping the spirit in which Becker was when he was still shaping.
